| The last major stop along the Sichuan-Tibet highway before crossing into Tibet Litang marks the heart of the Kham Tibetan culture. The majority population is Tibetan, and many older citizens can still be seen ambling about mumbling prayers with prayer wheels and beads in hand. Equally mixed in are the younger "Kham Cowboys" whose modernization has led to the adopting of sunglasses and motorcycles to suit their responsibilities on the high plateau. Litang sits at an astounding 4014 meters in elevation, so be prepared for the altitude. Attractive Tibetan settlements are scattered throughout the hills outside the town. Litang's greatest attraction though is certainly the annual horse festival in early August. Local Tibetans and scores of Chinese tourists come from far and wide to witness the spectacle of horse races and stunts, Indian and Tibetan influenced song and dance performances, and the overall colorful and exciting atmosphere around the event. Those interested in attending the festival should plan well in advance as it can be a hectic time in Litang. |
