Nestled between the mountains on the border of Sichuan
and Gansu Provinces, the tiny town of Langmusi
is a timeless place. Straddling the White
Dragon River, which divides the town in two, Langmusi is home to two large Tibetan Monasteries. The Namo Gorge and Huagai Mountain
form a dramatic backdrop to the west while an imposing red stone cliff
formation frames the tranquil village on the southeast side. Langmusi's only
main street bustles with monks adorned in red robes, smiling Tibetan cowboys on
motorbikes, and proud Hui Muslims. Fresh bread, yak meat in every form
and Gansu's
famous 8 Treasures tea are some of the staples here. Tibetans and Huis coexist in harmony and make Langmusi one of the most open, friendly and welcoming
destinations in all of China.
In summertime the green grass and countless wild flowers make for stunning
scenery and an ideal environment for a hike or horse trek. These outdoor
adventures afford visitors to Langmusi an up close experience with Tibetan
herders and nomads.
