Cang (pronounced tsahng)
Mountain, and the range of which it is part, forms a powerful backdrop to the west of Dali's old city. The range, which runs north-south
along Erhai Lake, averages 3,500 meters (11,000 feet)
above sea level and is snow-capped throughout the year. Its highest peak measures more than 4,100 meters. The nearest peak to ancient Dali can be reached after 9 hours of hiking from the city. The remarkably fertile Erhai valley owes
much to the plentiful streams which run down the mountainside emptying into the
lake.
The Cloud Pass, an easy 13 kilometer trail high up along the mountainside, is kept in excellent condition. The trail and cable cars which service the mountain offer fantastic views of Erhai Lake, ancient Dali and the expansive valley below.
