Jianshui Ancient Town
Jianshui was once an important trading center located strategically on the road to Vietnam, where the Dai Kingdom of Xishuangbanna met the edge of the Chinese empire. Famous sites here include the Chaoyang Gateway Arch, the Temple of Confucius (Wen Miao), and aristocratic mansions from the 19th century. The Chaoyang Gateway Arch was built in 1389 in the same style of Beijing’s Tian An Men Gate, though this one contains three tiers to Beijing’s two. The Confucian temple, Wen Miao, is the second largest Confucius temple in China, which dates back to the Yuan Dynasty. It maintains its ancient architecture and stonework, and is still used as a center of learning today.
A short drive from Jianshui is Tuanshan village, a very well preserved ancient town from the 19th century, which is an ideal place for a relaxing walk to break up your long drive to Yuanyang. A visit to the Zhang and Zhu Family Courtyards and Gardens provides interesting glimpses into the lifestyles of 19th century aristocratic families, while showcasing highly detailed stone and woodcarvings that are a trademark of the Qing Dynasty style. A visit here is ideal for anyone who wants to experience the beauty of Lijiang or Dali without the crowds or countless hawkers and souvenir shops.
